Social Media in the Music Industry – Social Media Week London

During Social Media Week 2010, London, there was one event dedicated to the music industry. It was Music to my Ears, hosted by Raj Kotecha of Creative Content Agency.

The panel which consisted of Uche Uchendu (BBC), Shurwin Beckford (Hey Buddy TV), Harvey Tadman (ThreeSixZero Group) and Universal Recording Artist, Jaya addressed the following questions:

- How has social media, as well as industry downturn, changed the marketing mix for the music industry?
- Has social media impacted the music industry’s ability to identify tastemakers and influencers?
- Can music industry techniques to connect consumers to brands be transferred to other industries?
- How does a music initiative stay ‘on message’ in a vibrant social media community?
- What are modern expectations of an artist, with regard to social media usage?
- How has social media assisted in the development of new revenues and strategic alliances?
- What are the expectations regarding discovery and consumption methods of music consumers in 2010?

    This Social Media Week event looked at whether there is a need to constantly update the public about your personal and professional life in order to succeed in the music business. Sherwin Beckford of HeyBuddy TV indicated that the general public aren’t interested in what colour knickers you’re wearing every day, whether it’s pink on Monday, blue on Tuesday and white on Wednesday. However, Chandesh Parekh explains that the general public ARE interested:
